Korea Beyond Seoul and Busan (2026): Gyeongju, Jeonju, Gangneung, Andong, Sokcho, Suwon, Ulsan and Jeju — Which to Pick, KTX Times, Fares, and What Is Now Free

Seoul and Busan absorb most first trips, and most second trips add a third city chosen from a blog list — usually the wrong one for the traveller. The regional cities differ in what they are good at and in how hard they are to move around, and Korea's high-speed rail has quietly made some of them closer than the capital's own suburbs. This part is a decision guide: what each place offers, how long it takes, what it costs after the 2026 fare cut, and what has become free.

Gyeongju — the one to add from Busan

The Silla capital for a thousand years, and the only Korean city where the historic centre is the city: grassy royal tombs in Daereungwon and Noseo-dong between cafés, the Cheomseongdae observatory in a field, and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond lit at night (small admission, about ₩3,000). Bulguksa, the UNESCO temple, has been free since May 2023 — many guides still quote the old ₩6,000 — and the Seokguram Grotto above it charges a modest fee for the walk to the Buddha. Rent a bicycle or use the city bus; the Hwangnidan-gil café street is the evening. From Busan it is a day trip with a 30-minute KTX or a 50-minute intercity bus; a night lets you see the pond after dark, which is the reason to come.

Gangneung — the one to add from Seoul

Ninety-odd minutes by KTX to the east coast: Gyeongpo Beach and its lake, Anmok coffee street (Korea's café culture began here), the Ojukheon house of the Shin Saimdang and Yi I on the ₩5,000 note, and Jeongdongjin for a sunrise train stop. In summer the beaches are the point; in winter the pine forests and the sea are the point. Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park are another hour north by bus if you have a second day — the Seoraksan cable car (round trip only, around ₩16,000) gives non-hikers the view.

Jeonju — the food trip

The Hanok Village is Korea's largest cluster of traditional houses turned guesthouses, cafés and hanbok-rental shops — touristy, and lovely early in the morning. The food is the reason: bibimbap in its home city, kongnamul gukbap (bean-sprout soup) for breakfast, and the makgeolli alleys where a kettle of rice wine comes with a table of side dishes. One night is right; combine with Damyang or Gwangju for a southern loop.

Suwon — the half-day

Hwaseong Fortress, the 18th-century wall around old Suwon, has been free to walk since April 2022 (the Haenggung palace inside charges ₩2,000, the combined ticket ₩4,000). Walk the 5.7 km loop or the northern half from Paldalmun to the Hwaseomun gate in two hours, then eat fried chicken in the Suwon chicken alley. Forty minutes from Seoul Station on subway line 1, or a 30-minute KTX/ITX hop.

Andong, Ulsan, Damyang — with a car or a reason

Hahoe Folk Village (Andong) is a real village of tiled and thatched houses in a river bend, with a mask-dance performance at weekends; it is 40 minutes from Andong station by bus, worth it for the countryside and the Byeongsan Seowon academy. Ulsan, Busan's industrial neighbour, has become a quiet coastal day trip: the Taehwagang bamboo forest in the city and the Daewangam pine-and-rock park by the sea, with Ganjeolgot for the country's first sunrise. Damyang's bamboo forest is a two-hour detour from Jeonju or Gwangju.

Jeju — the separate trip

Korea's holiday island: a volcanic coast, the Seongsan Ilchulbong crater, Hallasan (1,947 m, a full-day hike), the olle walking trails, waterfalls in Seogwipo, and the black-pig barbecue. Flights from Gimpo take an hour and are cheap outside holidays; the island has no railway and its buses are slow across the interior, so a rental car (IDP or Korean licence) is close to essential. Three nights minimum; it does not combine with a first mainland trip in a week.

Getting around outside the KTX

Intercity buses (시외버스/고속버스) cover everywhere trains do not, are frequent, and are booked on the KOBUS or T-money bus apps or at the terminal; Naver Map gives the schedules in English. Local buses take T-money everywhere; taxis are cheap outside Seoul and hailable with Kakao T. And in each of these cities the 1330 travel hotline will book, translate or advise in English, 24 hours.
